Nothing can make you cringe or jump like sitting on a cold toilet seat and it is only worse if you are using the bathroom in the middle of the night as the cold sensation of the toilet seat against your backside jolts you awake.
So what do you do to avoid this unpleasant situation? You could turn the heat up in your home and waste a bunch of money. You could put a space heater in the bathroom and wait for it to heat things up before you use the commode. Both of these options don’t really seem to make a lot of sense. So can anything be done?
Fortunately, there is another option out there. Heated toilet seats. Talk to anyone who has uses one and they don’t want to give it up.
Luckily, heated toilet seats are affordable and easy to use and install. Plus, they use very little energy.

Buying Guide for Heated Toilet Seats
Shape
The shape of the heated toilet is probably one of the two most important things you need to look for. Toilets come in either round or elongated shapes.
So it is important to know the shape of your toilet. Then you can figure out which heated toilet seats come in the shape you need to buy.
Color
The second most important thing you need to look for when buying a heated toilet seat is color.
Your new heated toilet seat needs to match the color of your toilet. Thankfully, most toilets are white, which works well since pretty much every heated toilet seat comes in white.
However, if your toilet is a color other than white you need to figure out which toilet seats come in a matching color so you can choose from those models.
Material
Standard toilet seats come in a variety of materials such as wood, soft plastic, and hard plastic. However, heated toilet seats (with or without bidets) are typically made of hard plastic. We do have one seat in our reviews that comes in a softer plastic.
Easy to Clean
Toilet seats that are made of hard plastic are typically pretty easy to clean, to begin with, but some modes take extra steps to help you keep things clean.
Some models will offer quick-release seats that can easily be removed to make cleaning easy.
Other models take things even further and are made with antimicrobial materials to help keep things clean and prevent growth.
Length of Power Cord
If you want to have a heated toilet seat you need to have electricity so it can warm itself up. This makes the length of the power cord a very important feature since you will need to plug the seat into an electrical.
If the cord is too short you might be tempted to use an extension cord, but many manufacturers discourage you from doing that due to safety concerns. So unless you are willing to get someone to install a new electrical outlet in your bathroom you want to pay attention to models that have a power cord that is long enough to use one of the existing electrical outlets in your bathroom.
Seat Temperature Settings
Heated toilet seats will usually have multiple heat settings.
Most models will have at least 3 temperature settings.
Nightlight
If you don’t like having to stumble around the dark bathroom in the middle of the night, but don’t like turning on all the lights you might be interested in getting a heated toilet seat with a nightlight.
Some models will come with a nightlight and others don’t. Getting a heated toilet seat with a nightlight really doesn’t increase the price very much. So if you think you would appreciate getting a heated toilet set with a nightlight you can focus in on those models as you shop.
We have actually noted which models have nightlights in our reviews.
Soft/Slow Closing
You will also have the choice between soft or slow closing seats or the standard seats, which could accidentally slam shut and pinch your fingers.
Most models will have the slow closing feature, but some do not. For many people having a slow closing seat isn’t essential. However, if you have little ones running around your home having a slow closing seat might be a nice feature to have.
If you want a heated toilet seat that has the slow closing feature you will want to pay attention to make sure it is included. We made sure to indicate if the slow closing feature is included on the models we reviewed.
Is a Bidet Included
If you only want a heated toilet seat and don’t want a bidet you will save some money. Additional features that might be included with these toilet seats would be nightlights and slow closing seats.
If you want a heated toilet seat with a bidet you will take a step up in price, but in addition to nightlights and slow closing seats the available options include air deodorizers, remote controls, and warm air dryers (which are available on pretty much every model).
Air Deodorizer
If you are looking at getting a heated toilet seat with a bidet know that air deodorizers come included with some models.
If you are only looking at the entry-level (lower-priced) options. it will be hard to find a model with an air deodorizer. However, that doesn’t mean that you need to buy one of the most expensive models in order to get one with an air deodorizer. Many of the middle of the road toilet seat bidets (in terms of price) offer air deodorizers.
We have noted which models have deodorizers in our reviews.
Remote Control
You won’t find or need remote controls for heated toilet seats without bidets.
On the other hand, since they have more features, you will see remote controls as an option for heated toilet seat bidets. You wouldn’t really think that a remote control would be a valuable feature, but it is. If you are a bigger person, or if you aren’t as flexible as you would like to be, it might be difficult turning to the side to see the buttons you want to push to control the various features. With a remote control using the various functions is trouble free and the remote can easily be mounted on the wall so it is out of the way when not in use.
Warranty
If you are considering buying a couple of very similar models one thing that might help you decide which one to go with is the warranty.
Warranties on heated toilet seats will usually range from 1-3 years. This can be a big factor in your buying decision = especially if you are buying one of the more expensive models.
Price/Budget
If you are just looking for a heated toilet seat and don’t want a bidet you can find many options around the $100 price point.
If you are interested in saving money on toilet paper, looking to be more green, or want to feel fresher and cleaner after using the bathroom you might be thinking of getting a heated toilet seat bidet. If you are looking at one of these options the price can usually range from just over $200 to $1,000 or more depending on what options you would like to be included.
