Review of Key Features and Benefits of the Tactacam REVEAL X-Pro Trail Camera

Camera

We start our review by looking at the camera. It has a 60° field of view, which is more than enough for most situations.

You can choose between three different resolutions for photos 16MP, 12MP, or 8MP. The video resolution is 1080p, which is the most popular resolution for trail cameras today.

In addition to the photo mode, the REVEAL X-Pro also has a photo + video mode that allows the camera to take a picture and then record a video, which is ideal if you want to diversify what the camera captures.

Smartphone App

The Tactacam Reveal app is a vital part of getting the most out of the X-Pro camera. It’s available in both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Once you have registered your camera, set up your account, and have the camera posted in the field you will use the app for more than simply viewing pictures and videos. It can also be used to update the camera’s settings as needed. You can choose how often to send photographs, ranging from immediately to once every 12 or 24 hours with more frequent transmissions reducing the camera’s expected battery life. The camera also checks for updates to your preferred camera settings made through the app either as soon as they are made, on a daily basis, or on hybrid mode, which is a mix of the immediate and daily options. When in hybrid mode the camera checks for settings updates and requests for HD photo or video downloads when the camera connects to the cellular network to send you pictures, which means that you receive your HD requests faster and the updates you requested to the camera settings take effect sooner – all with less power being consumed.

You are not limited to viewing the pictures and videos taken by the camera on your smartphone – you can also use the Web Portal on your computer to manage your account and view pictures and videos just like you would in the app.

The Reveal app provides an intuitive user experience and offers a comprehensive range of features. While it is worth noting that the apps of some competitors such as SPYPOINT and Moultrie offer filters that allow users to search for activity patterns based on environmental factors and time of day, the Tactacam REVEAL app is very reliable and provides good results.

Data Plan

Tactacam REVEAL X-Pro can operate on both ATT and Verizon 4G plans. The X-Pro comes with both a Verizon and an AT&T SIM card, allowing you to choose which network you want to use. All you need to do is insert the SIM card for the network you want to use into the camera. The Tactacam data plan options are very affordable and the prices are the same regardless of which network the camera is using.

You will automatically receive low-resolution images from the camera. This helps to minimize data usage and helps to keep the cost of each data plan lower. If you want to receive a high-resolution copy of specific images, you can purchase a package of HD image downloads for a small additional fee. The prices of these HD image downloads is listed in the chart below.

With regard to videos, they’re automatically saved to the camera’s memory card. While the option to download the video clips is not automatically included in any of the data plans that Tactacm offers, going out to physically retrieve the memory card from the X-Pro is not the only option for you to view the videos it has captured. Similar to what they did with HD photos, Tactacam also offers packages of high-resolution video downloads for a very reasonable price.

Here are the data plan options for the Tactacam Reveal X-Pro. You can pay monthly or annually; with the latter choice being more affordable if you want year-round monitoring.

Built-in GPS Tracker

Unlike traditional trail cameras as well as many cellular trail cameras the Tactacam REVEAL X-Pro cellular trail camera comes with a built-in GPS tracker. The built-in GPS tracker is extremely handy when you want to locate your camera in case you misplaced it or it got stolen.

Motion (PIR) Sensor

The Tactacam REVEAL X-Pro trail camera is equipped with one motion (PIR) sensor. The sensor has an impressive 96+ foot detection range, which is much longer than many other trail cameras.

Though the detection angle of 45° is a bit narrower than with some other cameras, the REVEAL X-Pro should work just fine for the vast majority of settings.

The sensitivity of the PIR sensor can be adjusted to suit your particular needs. This will help you to make sure that nothing will pass in front of the camera without being captured while helping to minimize the chances of the trail camera experiencing false triggers.

Trigger Speed

This cellular trail camera has a trigger speed of 0.5 seconds. It is a decent rate and should be just fine for most situations, but there are some cameras with faster trigger speeds.

Flash

One of the selling points of the Tactacam REVEAL X-Pro is its adjustable no glow flash, with an 80-foot flash range that is longer than that of many of its competitors – especially among cameras with no glow flash. The main benefit of having a no glow flash is that it enables the camera to keep its location concealed while taking pictures and videos at night.

In addition to having no glow flash, the REVEAL X-Pro’s adjustable Night Mode setting can be a game changer at night. The ‘Max flash’ option is for situations where the camera is monitoring a large or expansive area and you need the brightest flash, but this option uses an increased exposure length and can result in moving animals or people appearing blurry. The ‘Min. blur’ option uses a faster trigger speed resulting in a shorter flash range and was designed to be used in smaller areas where the subject is nearer the camera with the aim of reducing blur. ‘Balanced’ is a mixture of both the ‘Max flash’ and ‘Min. blur’ options.

Dimensions

The Tactacam REVEAL X-Pro trail camera, with dimensions of 3.62 x 4.13 x 5.47 inches, is pretty compact. This is especially true when you consider that the X-Pro has a color LCD screen and like most other cellular trail cameras, holds more batteries than traditional trail cameras.

Hours of Operation Timer

The REVEAL X-Pro trail camera features an hours of operation timer, or an “operating time setting” as Tactacam calls it, which lets you specify the hours each day that the camera will be in operation.

If you don’t need the camera to monitor the area around it 24 hours a day, this feature is going to help you save money on your data plan, and conserve battery life and storage space on the memory card.

LCD Screen

The camera has a built-in color LCD screen, which you access by opening the front cover. You use the LCD screen to view and change the camera’s settings as well as to preview pictures and videos if you are checking the camera in the field.

Having an LCD screen is a nice bonus since many cellular trail cameras don’t have them, which requires you to do everything through the app on your smartphone – even when you are in the field checking the camera.

Memory Card

SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SDHC memory card

Like other trail cameras, you will need to buy a memory card for your new Tactacam. The REVEAL X-Pro can accommodate SD/SDHC memory cards with a capacity of up to 32GB. Class 10 U3 cards, with a minimum write speed of 90MB/sec are required. We recommend using a SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SDHC memory card that is shown above.

The X-Pro also offers Loop Recording, which if selected will cause the oldest files to be overwritten with newly captured pictures and videos when the SD card becomes full.

As always, remember to format your memory card before using it in the camera.

Password Protection

You can prevent strangers from using the camera and changing its settings by encrypting it with a password. To enable this feature go into the settings menu and select the password option where you will be asked to create a passcode that you will be asked to key in each time you want to use the camera.

Batteries

Energizer AA Ultimate Lithium batteries

Batteries are an essential component of any trail camera, and the Tactacam REVEAL X-Pro is no exception. This camera requires 12 AA batteries to power it. While this might seem like a lot using this many batteries isn’t uncommon for cellular trail cameras.

The X-Pro is pretty energy efficient, with Tactacam stating that you can expect over 4,000 pictures when operating with lithium batteries, and 2,500+ when using alkaline batteries. Tactacam recommends using Energizer AA Ultimate Lithium batteries and we agree. If you consider what type of batteries you should use in a trail camera you will find that not only will lithium batteries last longer, and provide consistent voltage through their life cycle, but they outperform alkaline batteries in extreme temperatures.

If you’re planning on leaving the X-Pro unattended in the field for long periods of time, which many cellular trail camera owners do, then investing in a set of lithium batteries is the way to go.

Input for External Power Supply

The REVEAL X-Pro offers an input for an external power supply. This allows users to connect their camera to a 12V-2A external power source such as Tactacam’s solar panel. By connecting the camera to an external power source battery consumption will be greatly reduced and the camera can stay running in the field for even longer periods of time.

If you decide to use an external power source with the X-Pro the batteries in the camera will act as a backup power source.

Image Stamp

The image stamp feature on the Tactacam REVEAL X-Pro cellular trail camera allows you to easily document important information about the photos and videos the camera captures. The image stamp includes crucial details such as the date, time, temperature, moon phase, and the camera name of your choosing. This makes it easier to sort through the pictures and videos later as you look to identify patterns of behavior.

The image stamp can also be turned off if you don’t want to use it. This can be done by accessing the settings menu on the camera and disabling the image stamp feature. This is especially useful if you want to focus on wildlife photography and don’t want to have the image stamp information displayed on the images or videos.

Included Accessories

The Tactacam REVEAL X-Pro cellular camera’s package includes the following accessories for installation and use.

  • Instruction Manual
  • Mounting Strap
  • Antenna
  • (1) Verizon & (1) AT&T SIM Card

It doesn’t include a threaded mounting tripod like some other trail cameras out there. However, it does have 1/4″ tripod sockets on the bottom and back of the camera, which gives you alternative ways to mount it. Luckily there are many affordable options for tree camera mounts on Amazon.

Areas of Use

The Tactacam REVEAL X-Pro cellular trail camera is a versatile device that can be used for a variety of purposes. Whether you are monitoring game animals or providing security surveillance for your home, farm, business, or hunting property, the REVEAL X-Pro has you covered. It can also be used for nature photography.

Plus, thanks to its ability to use different cellular networks the X-Pro provides reliable performance in virtually any location.

Pricing

The price of the Tactacam REVEAL X-Pro is very affordable and is only a bit higher than entry-level priced cellular trail cameras. However, when you consider that the feature set on the X-Pro includes no-glow flash, GPS location, and the ability to choose between the AT&T and Verizon networks, things that you don’t find on many other cellular trail cameras, it becomes obvious that the X-Pro is a tremendous value.

Overall, the Tactacam REVEAL X-Pro is an excellent choice for those looking for a high-quality cellular trail camera without breaking the bank. It offers a great combination of features and affordability, making it a popular choice

Tactacam REVEAL X Gen 2.0 Cellular Trail Camera

Tactacam REVEAL X Gen 2.0 Cellular Trail Camera

The REVEAL X Gen 2.0 is a great cellular trail camera. It has a lower price than the REVEAL X-Pro, but the Tactacam REVEAL X-Pro has a few features that the REVEAL X Gen 2.0 cellular trail camera doesn’t:

  • Built-in LCD screen
  • No glow flash
  • Built-in GPS

Overall, the REVEAL X-Pro is a great choice if you’re looking for a feature-rich cellular trail camera, making it worth the extra money if you need those features. However, if you don’t need these additional features, then the REVEAL X Gen 2.0 is a great choice. You can find out more details about the Gen 2.0 by reading our full REVEAL X Gen 2.0 cellular trail camera review.

Moultrie Mobile Delta Base Cellular Trail Camera

Moultrie Mobile Delta Base Cellular Trail Camera

The Moultrie Mobile Delta Base is another popular cellular trail camera and for good reason. Not only is it one of the most affordable cellular trail cameras out there, but comes with no glow flash, which is somewhat unexpected on budget-friendly models. Like all Moultrie models, it comes with the great Moultrie Mobile app and offers several affordable data plan options.

What the Delta Base doesn’t come with that the REVEAL X-Pro does is GPS location capabilities and an LCD screen. The Delta base comes in two versions, which are designed for the Verizon and AT&T networks. This will require you to know which network you want to use at the time of purchase.

We also did a review of the Moultrie Mobile Delta Base if you want to read more about it.
